🧑‍🌾 ABOUT THE PRODUCER

It is in the small village of Watou, in the heart of the province of West Flanders, that one of the most emblematic breweries in Belgium is located: St. Bernardus. A brewing institution that today attracts and welcomes beer lovers from all over the world.

The history of the brewery dates back to the end of the Second World War. Indeed, in 1945, the now famous Trappist abbey of Saint-Sixte in Westvleteren, located a few kilometers from Watou, decided to put an end to the marketing of its beers to refocus on monastic life. But to perpetuate their know-how, the monks chose to entrust the production of their beers to Evarist Deconinck, a local brewer, who founded the St. Bernardus Brewery.

This collaboration between the abbey and the brewery makes it possible to preserve the historic recipes of Trappist beers, with the authorization to use the famous Westvleteren yeast. For several decades, St. Bernardus beers were produced under Trappist license, until this ended in 1992. In 1997 it lost the right to use the “Trappist” label and the name “Sixtus”. The monk becomes laughing, loses his skullcap and exchanges his homespun frock for a cloak to become noble. However, today, the brewery continues to scrupulously follow ancient brewing methods, earning it international recognition.
